The term “BANDOG” or “BANDOGGE” originated in 1250-1300th in Central England and meant a mastiff dog, which was tied to a chain during a day and released at night to protect the territories. The first Bandogges may have originated from the dogs who participated in the battles with bulls, from mastiff guards, or by crossing the breeds of dogs that participated in the Crusade. The first modern bandogges were bred in the late 60’s of 20th century by the American veterinarian John B. Swinford, who wanted to create the ultimate guard dog. Dogs of this type are often referred to as Swinford Bandog or American Mastiff. Most breeders used the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, English Mastiff and Neapolitan Mastiff for foundation breeds.
