Descended from the old Roman Molossian, the Cane Corso previously scattered all over Italy, and only in recent past the breed became popular in the Province Apulia and the nearby areas of Southern Italy. The legend goes that the breed’s name is derived from the Latin ‘cohors’ which means guardian of the farm. In the 1970s, once facing extinction, the Cane Corso breed was rescued from the efforts of enthusiasts by means of cross-breeding of selected breeds. Today the breed serves as guardian, protection, tracking and police dog.
