The Smooth Fox Terrier is a small but powerful dog, with well-defined muscles, which are necessary for fox hunting. For starters, their skull is flat and tapering. The head is chiseled and wedge-shaped. Their ears fold forward in V-shaped form, and their eyes are small, deep set, and dark in color. For its body, the tail is docked to 3/4 length and stands upward. Their coat is smooth and lays flat against the body, as the its name suggests.
Even though the Smooth Fox Terrier's history has been largely undocumented, they have been recognized as a distinctive breed in England since at least the 18th century. One of the first documents that proved their history was a portrait of man named Colonel Thornton with his beloved dog, Pitch. The breed is also when known as the first breed in the fox terrier family to be given official recognition by the Kennel Club in 1875.
